When Transport for London (TfL) announced in September that it was planning to rescind Uber’s licence to operate in the city, a lot of people were shocked. Twitter was ablaze with angry comments, op-eds were published across the country, and an online petition to save the company began to circulate, quickly becoming the fastest growing petition of the year, as more than a quarter of a million people signed.

While this may seem excessive – there are a lot of causes out there which are arguably more valuable than a convenient transportation method – to a lot of people it’s not just about an easy, affordable way to get around without having to wait around for a bus. Uber can be a lifeline for women, people of colour, LGBT people, and people with disabilities, for whom black cabs are not an option and night buses can feel unsafe. Read more…
